Research activities and interests

I am a medical doctor taking care of very very small patients called yeasts and bacteria. Working in the laboratory of Dr. Robert Cedergren at the University of Montreal I learned basic surgical techniques to dissect RNA into pieces using molecular scissors known as ribozymes. Our team discovered that in the bacterium Escherichia coli the hammerhead ribozyme does not work efficiently because the target is protected by the ribosomes. We found that mutations in one of the ribosomal proteins: S12, that decrease the speed of translation, improved the action of the hammerhead ribozyme. We also discovered that in the more complex unicellular Saccharomyces cerevisiae or budding yeast the hammerhead ribozyme is completely devoid of activity. However, the ribozyme became active after cell cycle arrest. My current interest is how to get further improvement of these surgical techniques and eventually get them to work using bigger patients, like for example: Homo sapiens.
