Research activities and interests
I am a medical doctor taking care of very very small patients called
yeasts and bacteria. Working in the laboratory of Dr. Robert Cedergren
at the University of Montreal I learned basic surgical techniques to dissect
RNA into pieces using molecular scissors known as ribozymes. Our team discovered
that in the bacterium Escherichia coli the hammerhead ribozyme does not
work efficiently because the target is protected by the ribosomes. We found
that mutations in one of the ribosomal proteins: S12, that decrease the
speed of translation, improved the action of the hammerhead ribozyme. We
also discovered that in the more complex unicellular Saccharomyces cerevisiae
or budding yeast the hammerhead ribozyme is completely devoid of activity.
However, the ribozyme became active after cell cycle arrest. My current
interest is how to get further improvement of these surgical techniques
and eventually get them to work using bigger patients, like for example:
